Cut Home Heating Costs By 10% For $200
Fairfield County winters are harsh! Thanks to your furnace, the temperature extremes are hard on your wallet. My natural gas bill in the middle of winter is well over $300, and I have a small house in Stratford! You and I are both looking for ways to easily lower that cost. I want to introduce a product to you that can and will:
- Save fuel and money by automatically adjusting boiler output as energy requirements change
- Works with any heating fuel
- Cost is recoverable in 12 to 24 months
- Can be installed on most new or existing gas, oil, or propane fired boilers
- Produces Less wear and tear on your boiler
It’s not a miracle but it is a smart product. It definitely qualifies for what I believe to be an excellent and inexpensive way to catch some of those dollars that have been flying out of your chimney.
It works like this:
Your thermostat senses that the air in your house is getting a little cool. It tells your furnace to start a big hot flame and start circulating warm water through your pipes to heat your house. That’s just fine by me. Except for one tiny problem.
Odds are the water that is in your furnace is already hot, very hot. Hot enough to warm the air of your house. So why turn on the big hot flame and heat it some more? Why not just circulate that already hot water through the pipes to heat your house?
Good question. It’s a flaw in the typical heating system and installing a controller to manage the flame in your furnace can solve the problem. Fortunately, it’s not expensive. I have seen them on ebay for $200 and they are not terribly complicated to install. I bet they can be had for even less when the weather turns to spring and the demand for such a product declines. Local plumbing and heating supply stores in Fairfield County will also carry them.
Apparently lots of manufacturers make these. One I found that had a very good online overview with video and easy to understand language is made by Beckett. They are one of the largest manufacturers of heating equipment and I have seen their equipment installed on many homes in Fairfield County. Here’s the link to the Beckett HeatManager information. The two small tabs at the top “how it works” and “why it works” should help you understand more than the brief overview I just gave you.
There’s another type of controller I am looking into as well. It has an outside sensor that works in conjunction with the outside temperature and also somehow controls the burn time of your furnace. I know it’s more expensive but it may be worth the extra cash. When I find an illustration that is as good as this one about the Beckett HeatManager I’ll deliver that to you in another blog post.
And yes, I am a cheapskate. I am not ashamed. Products like this will save us money and are good for the planet.
